To my dearest classmates,
I am not certain I feel "most prepared" in any particular area. Teaching a high school English classroom still feels distant and hazy. I am positive that I will be ready when the day comes, or least that's what I keep telling myself...
The areas in which I feel least prepared? Well, we made a huge list in class this past week, but the ones that struck a chord with me are:
1) The effect that personal and emotional issues with students that may potentially overtake my classroom or teaching style.
2) The balance between my personal and professional lives.
3) Strategies to use when I just cannot reach my students! This one worries me because I do not feel my current "canon of lessons" is vast enough for the classroom. Teachers always need Plans A, B, C, D, E, F, G...X, Y, and Z. Right?
I cannot run from my weaknesses as a teacher. If I do, I am positive that my students will see directly through me. Then, I need to worry about being a respected, credible figurehead in the classroom. I intend to always be prepared with multiple ways to approach a problem or situation. That's easier said than done, and it involves knowing my students and how my school operates. On the flip side, I am definitely going to be caught off-guard and need to correctly think on my feet. At this point in my pre-teaching career, these are the skills I need to work on the most.
Sincerely,
Imtiaz "Taz" Alam
